La garenne de Suze-la-Rousse is a vast 23-hectare wooded park dotted with remains, including one of the last remaining jeux de paume in France.
La garenne: pre-Roman oppida from the Latin "garenna", in Provençal "gareno", meaning reserved forest.
Description
It occupies almost the entire rocky plateau on which the Château is built. Holm oak, white oak, boxwood, pine: the diversity of its species, mainly Mediterranean, makes it a pleasant place to stroll. Originally, the garennes were game reserves where the seigneurial right of reservation applied. The remains of a paume game, a dovecote, an "glacière" (ice house) and a chapel dot the site, offering numerous points of interest for visitors.
For children, there's an orienteering course. To obtain a map, contact the Château reception desk or the Suze la Rousse Tourist Office.
